Media giant Warner Bros has acquired the developer behind multiplayer brawler MultiVersus, Player First Games.

Player First Games is a relatively new company, with MultiVersus being the first game it launched. The game officially launched in May, having had extensive early access and beta releases in 2022 and 23, which met with widespread approval from gamers.

Staying in place

Under the terms of the deal, it is understood that co-founder Tony Huynh and Chris White will continue to lead the developer. Warner Bros and Player First Games have been working together for several years on MultiVersus – the game features characters from various Warner Bros-owned franchises – so the formal tie up between the two companies is no surprise.

Huynh has said the company is working to make MultiVersus the best game experience it can be, and integrating with Warner Bros will help with that.

Season 2

The news came just ahead of the launch of season 2 of MultiVersus. The game is notable for containing playable characters from multiple franchises, including DC superheroes, Looney Tunes, Adventure Time, Scooby Doo and more. It is a platform fighter, with the aim being to knock opponents beyond a stage boundary by inflicting enough damage on them. Various game options are available, including one-v-one, free for all and battles involving teams of two.

In season 2, there are new game modes, as well as new characters to play such as Samurai Jack and Beetlejuice. MultiVersus is available via Steam and the Epic Games Store on PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One and PC.

Warner Bros already owns numerous development studios, including NetherRealm Studios, TT Games and Avalanche Software.
