The world shared Atsuku Sato’s grief in May when her beloved dog, Kabosu – made famous in the doge meme – died. But now she has shared happier news – she has adopted a new pet.

Bringing joy

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sato posted in Japanese that she had adopted a new dog called Neiro. Neiro – who’s name translates as meaning ‘the color of sound’ – is a 10-year-old rescue dog.

Sato added that Neiro has had a hard life so far and has faced various frightening, difficult and sad experiences. But now she plans to bring joy into Neiro’s life.

Neito can hopefully bring joy to primary school teacher Sato too. Her previous pet Kabosu, a Shibu inu dog, did and became globally famous when a picture of him with a side-eye look and crossed paws went viral in 2013. It has gone on to become one of the most iconic memes in history – the doge came from a deliberate misspelling of dog – and inspired a cryptocurrency called Dogecoin.

Crypto activity

While the cryptocurrency started as a joke among software engineers, it is now worth more than $20 billion.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, since the news broke, new meme coins named after Sato’s new pet have emerged – all hoping to become the next Dogecoin. It has been reported by Bankless Times that at least 24 memecoins named Neiro have been named since Sato’s announcement, and most have recorded active trading volumes and gains in value since, although some have also had significant losses.

Whether Neito goes on to emulate his predecessor’s career in memes remains to be seen, but, for now, is providing companionship for Sato.
