PlayStation is celebrating its 30th anniversary later this year and has announced some of its plans to commemorate this milestone.
Timed to coincide with the launch of Astro Bot, Team Asobi’s tribute to 30 years of PlayStation characters, stories and magical moments today, PlayStation has announced on its blog some its plans to commemorate its 30th anniversary in December.
Music, trials and games
For instance, there will be a free trial version of Gran Turismo 7. This will include some fan favorite cars, tracks and race events that evoke the nostalgia of the first Gran Turismo game. This will be available to PS4 and PS5 players.
Music has been an integral part of many iconic PlayStation moments over the years. To commemorate this, in partnership with Sony Music, each month from October to January PlayStation will be releasing on Spotify a set of digital soundtracks from favorite PS franchises. Various soundtracks will also be available including God of War, God of War II, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Twisted Metal, Starhawk and Unit 13.
There will also be a specially curated PlayStation 30th Anniversary playlist on Spotify, featuring the most-streamed music by PlayStation gamers around the world.
In addition, there will be a new collection of products called ‘Shape of Play’, giving players the opportunity to play games with the iconic PlayStation shapes. This includes Battle – a board game where the challenge is to line up four different shapes of the game color – and more.
Phenomenon
The PlayStation was launched by Sony in December 1994 in Japan, and worldwide the next year. It was phenomenally successful, becoming the first console to ship 100 million units. Its successor, the PlayStation 2, was released in 200 and is still the best-selling console of all time, having sold more than 155 million units. The PlayStation 3 followed in 2006, followed by the fourth iteration in 2013. The PlayStation 5, launched in 2020, sold 10 million units in 2498 days, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation to date.
More announcements of what PlayStation is planning will be forthcoming in the near future, according to the company.
