- Taylor Swift received backlash this week for her friendship with ‘Trump supporter’ Brittany Mahomes
- Mahomes was praised by Republican candidate Trump last week, after she ‘strongly defended’ him online
- Later in the week, Swift told her fans she would be voting for Kamala Harris in the November election

She’s the pop star with the world at her feet.
But this week, Taylor Swift received backlash from her usually loyal following – as she was seen sharing a hug with Brittany Mahomes.
The Karma singer, 34, was sitting alongside Mahomes at the US Open Men’s Final on Sunday, September 8 – along with her husband, Kansas City Chief quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and Swift’s boyfriend, Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce.
And while the quartet chatted amicably during the match, it was their embrace as they said goodbye which led to social media outcry from Swifties around the world.
Mahomes was last week praised by Republican candidate and former US president Donald Trump for “strongly defending him” online.
“I want to thank beautiful Brittany Mahomes for so strongly defending me, and the fact that MAGA is the greatest and most powerful Political Movement in the History of our now Failing Country,” Trump posted from his Truth Social account. “It is nice to see someone who loves our Country, and wants to save it from DOOM. What a great couple – see you both at the Super Bowl!”
So it’s no surprise that Swift’s fans took umbrage with their friendship.
Referencing her 2019 track Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince – a song protesting America’s political climate under Trump’s first presidency – and its corresponding documentary, one fan wrote on Twitter/X, “Taylor girl, that’s not very Miss Americana of you like how can you stand to be around someone like that.”
Another added, “It’s disheartening when someone advocates for justice in film but fails to act consistently.”
A third continued, “I don’t expect a billionaire to lead the revolution or anything, I’m just confused as to why one would make a movie about standing up for what’s right at any cost only to literally never stand for anything again.”
‘Harris fights for the causes I believe need a warrior to champion them’
However, later in the week, Swift appeared to redeem herself to some fans – after making her feelings about the presidential election this November very clear.
In an Instagram post to her 283 million followers, the pop star publicly endorsed Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz.
After watching the Harris-Trump debate on September 10, Swift wrote, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” she said. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.
“I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.”
Within 24 hours of her announcement, nearly 340,000 people had visited the voter registration website, vote.gov, using a custom link created and shared by Swift.
