She’s the pop star who shot to fame earlier this year.
But now Chappell Roan has had to clarify comments she made about the US presidential election.
The Good Luck, Babe! singer, 26, took to TikTok on Wednesday (September 25) to elaborate on her politics, after fans accused her of “playing both sides” and being “cowardly” following a recent interview.
Comments that were taken out of context – where she said of Democrats and Republicans, “There’s problems on both sides” – circulated on social media this week, leading to huge backlash for Roan.
So the vocalist took the opportunity to set the record straight via her TikTok account.
Garnering 1.8 million views and 340k likes in just a few hours, Roan captioned her post, “I’m done talking about it. If you don’t get what I’m saying from this, it’s a lost cause. And I’m not forcing you to agree with me. This is my statement. Have a good day.”
“Obviously f*** the policies of the right,” she said, while also castigating what she called “some of the left’s completely transphobic and completely genocidal views”.
Roan revealed she was voting for Harris, but added, “I’m not settling for what has been offered … this is not me playing both sides. This is me questioning both sides.”
She continued, “Actions speak louder than words and actions speak louder than an endorsement.”
Roan’s fierce political opinions
Roan has previously denounced the Biden-Harris administration’s failure to defend queer rights against hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ bills tabled by Republicans, as well as their ongoing support for Israel during the assault on Gaza that has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians.
Harris’s social media team previously used Roan’s song Femininomenon in a TikTok video, which showed pictures of a disheveled looking Trump wearing a Make America Great Again cap.
