One of the stars of last year’s horror hit movie Five Nights at Freddy’s has confirmed he is reprising his role in the upcoming sequel, which starts filming next month.

Star return

While we have known about a sequel being made for some time, until now it hasn’t been confirmed if Matthew Lillard, who played main antagonist William Afton, would return. At the end of the first film, Afton appeared to meet a grisly end, but as any horror fan knows, appearances can be deceptive.

Now, we know that he – and Lillard – are returning. Talking to Forbes, Lillard confirmed his role in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, as well as giving a few teasers about what to expect in the sequel.

“I think the fimmakers have done a great job of learning from the first movie of what fans want, and I think they’re giving a lot more of that,” he said. “It’s going to be more exciting, and I think its going to have more action. It’s going to have a lot of character development stuff.”

Scarier sequel

The Five Nights at Freddy’s games are renowned for their dense lore, and Lillard’s hints that the film will explore more of that will surely be music to fans’ ears.

Separately, Josh Hutcherson, who plays Mike Schmidt, the security guard who discovers the secrets of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, has also teased what the second film will be like. In an interview with Variety, he said: “Its gonna be a lot of fun with the source. It’s gonna be scarier too.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s was a surprise hit at the box office last year, taking $297 million globally – making it Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film to date.

Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 is set to open in theaters on December 5, 2025.
