Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan is planning his next film, with a release date set for summer 2026 and an A-list actor lined up to star in it, according to reports.
Date named
Deadline says that Nolan, who’s last film, Oppenheimer, won multiple Oscars earlier this year, is working on his next film. He is also reportedly working with Universal on this – the studio he worked with on Oppenheimer – although Universal has yet to comment.
It has also been reported that Matt Damon is in talks to star in the movie.
As yet, no details about the film – including a title or plotlines – have been revealed, other than a release date – July 17, 2026. Shooting is thought to begin sometime early in 2025. However, this lack of detail is not unknown for Nolan films.
Award-winning film
Oppenheimer was one of the biggest films of 2023. It famously opened against Barbie, and while that film grossed more at the worldwide box office, it was Oppenheimer that fared better during awards season. Not that Oppenheimer didn’t do well – it took more than $975 million globally. At the Oscars, Oppenheimer took home seven awards, including best picture and best director for Nolan. Oppenheimer also won seven awards at the Baftas.
Damon has worked with Nolan on a couple of occasions previously. Nolan first directed Damon in 2014’s Interstellar, before the pair came together again in Oppenheimer. Nolan is known for working with certain actors on multiple occasions – Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy are two actors who have been directed by him in three or more films.
