• Disney has confirmed when the live-action version of beloved film will be released in theaters
  • Movie will land in middle of packed schedule of big budget films
  • Disney hasn’t confirmed the plot of the new film yet

Lilo & Stitch is one of Disney’s most beloved films of the 21st century, and now the House of Mouse has confirmed when the live action version will hit theaters.

Crowded schedule

Having previously said at D23 that Lilo & Stitch would be released in the summer of 2025, Disney has now given fans a definite date – May 23.

The live action Lilo & Stitch will land on the same weekend that long-running Tom Cruise-based franchise Mission: Impossible 8 is released. While they might have different target audiences, could it become 2025’s version of Barbenhiemer – where theater goers watched Barbie and Oppenheimer back-to-back? Stranger things have happened.

Lilo & Stitch will also be up against Marvel’s Thunderbolts* and the latest Karate Kid film, which both also open in May 2025.

Maia Kealoha will be taking on the role of Lilo. Chris Sanders – who co-wrote and directed the original animated version alongside Dean DeBlois – will voice Stitch. Dean Fleischer Camp is directing the new film.

Plot closely guarded

While Disney hasn’t said what the plot of the film will be, going from previous experience with the company’s live-action versions of animations, it is likely that it will follow that of the original.

In that 2002 film, an orphaned girl from Hawaii, Lilo, who is being raised by her older sister, adopts a ‘dog’ she calls Stitch. Stitch turns out to be a genetically engineered extraterrestrial creature that was designed to cause chaos and destruction. But Lilo and Stitch develop a close bond and he looks to keep his newfound family together.

Disney has already given us a taster of what the live action film will look like. You can see it here:
