Tom Holland has confirmed that Spider-Man 4 is officially happening, and here are some of the villains that we’d love to see Spidey come up against in the new film.

Appearing on the Jimmy Fallon Show, Holland – who had recently said he’d seen a script for Spider-Man 4 that excited him – said that production on the movie will begin next year.

But after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, who will be the main villain for Spidey to come up against? We present four candidates who could tackle the web-slinger. Of course, this is all speculation at this stage – we won’t know who the villain is for some time, and Marvel is notorious for keeping things under wraps or even providing diversions.

Black Cat

Black Cat – the alter-ego of Felicia Hardy, one of Spidey’s traditional love interests – is a character yet to be been in any of the recent cinematic incarnations of Spider-Man.

In recent months, there have been rumors that Sydney Sweeney has been in talks to play the character, but this has yet to be verified.

Black Cat, who is trained in various fighting styles and acrobatics, becomes an accomplished cat burglar. If, as has been speculated, Spider-Man 4 will see a more stripped-back street-level Spidey, then Black Cat could be an ideal foe.

Hobgoblin

While Holland’s Spider-Man came up against Green Goblin in No Way Home, that was the one from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man universe. While it is unlikely that a MCU Green Goblin will appear, we could see a Hobgoblin.

In the comics, Ned Leeds – Parker’s best friend in the MCU version – has been intricately linked with the Hobgoblin over the years, having been brainwashed to serve as a stand-in for the villain. Having Spidey come up against is friend (although Ned now has no recollection of ever meeting Peter) could be an interesting dynamic.

Kingpin

Kingpin is one of Spider-Man’s traditional foes from the comic books and animated series. Crime boss (and sometimes politician) Wilson Fisk often finds his nefarious plans thwarted by the web-slinger.

Kingpin already exists in the MCU and is set to come up against Daredevil in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series on Disney+. Peter Parker briefly met Daredevil’s alter-ego Matt Murdock in No Way Home, so it is more than possible that their paths could cross again in a film. Again, this would fit with a more street-level Spidey.

Knull

Knull, the God of the Symbiotes, will be introduced to cinema goers in the forthcoming film Venom: The Last Dance, where he comes after Venom and Eddie Brock.

Kelly Marcel, who directed Venom: The Last Dance, recently said that she didn’t think that this film would be the only outing for Knull. She said he is too big a villain to be just a ‘one shot’ in cinematic terms.

Indeed, there has been persistent speculation that Venom and Eddie will meet up with Spider-Man in the The Last Dance, given the post-credit scene in No Way Home, where Venom and Eddie appear. Thus far, all the trailers have given no indication that Spidey will appear but, again, Marvel is known for keeping surprises up its sleeve until a film hits theaters. But bringing Venom, Eddie and Knull into the MCU would certainly excite fans.
