- Donald Trump looks to have secured a second term in office
- There is a long history of how long US presidents can serve
- One president has served for more than two terms

Donald Trump looks to have secured an historic victory in the 2024 US Presidential election – but could he run again for a third time in 2028?
Could Trump run again?
Trump and the Republican Party are only just beginning their celebrations as the 45th president of the United States will also be the 47th, but already some people are looking towards the next election in 2028.
However, under current rules set out in the US Constitution, Trump will not be allowed to seek a third term in office – and this is something that dates back to the first president of the US, George Washington.
Constitutional amendment
When Washington was in power, he stepped aside after serving two terms of office. While never official, that two-term limit was respected by all presidents that followed until the 1930s. Then, Franklin D Roosevelt decided to run for a third term – and won. He also won a fourth term in office, serving in all from 1932-44.
But in 1947, the US House of Representatives, a proposal was put forward to enshrine in the constitution that only two terms could be served by any one president. This was ratified, as the 22nd Amendment, in 1951.
Before the election, Trump said in an interview with Sinclair Media Group that if he lost the election, he probably wouldn’t seek to run again as a candidate in 2028. Now that he has won, he won’t be able to, so the Republican Party will have to find a new candidate.
Another question that has been popular on social media on election night has been how has Barron Trump got so tall? In an appearance at Mar-a-Lago, Barron, the youngest son of Donald Trump appeared to be several inches taller than everyone else on the podium. Of course, the internet has had its say on this.
