It’s the film franchise that first burst onto our screens over two decades ago.

And now Shrek is back with a fifth movie!

Confirmed by Dreamworks Animation on Twitter/X this week, the official account wrote, “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”

As fans have waited since 2010’s Shrek Forever After for another movie, it’s no wonder that the social media reaction to the news was wild – and, of course, sparked some amazing memes.

Read on to see the top picks from the Pubity.com team…

Although 2026 does seem Far, Far Away, original fans of Shrek will be front and center at movie theaters when the time does come

While others couldn’t wait to play dress up

Or get their old merch out

Some were just relieved to be celebrating good news

And were baffled by those who were still seeing misery in the world

It’s Charli XCX’s Brat summer and we’re just living in it

The UK is still riding high from the General Election the country’s change in government

While others saw the movie as a light at the end of the tunnel after going through the US elections

Others were thrilled that Cameron Diaz is stepping out of acting retirement to reprise her role of Princess Fiona

As Toy Story 5 is due to debut the same summer, some noted the difference in the films

Although they did marvel at how we seem to have gone back in time

And gave the bosses at Dreamworks the idea to do something very silly

While others simply begged them for a job

Some reactions were… odd

And while the end of the world may be nigh, we’re hoping that we can perhaps hang on just a little bit longer

(unless this is in the script)

But as for now, the countdown is officially on until we get to watch Shrek 5
