• The nation watched with bated breath last weekend, as England played Spain in the final of the Euros
  • Sadly, the Spanish team won in a 2-1 defeat to England
  • While some mourned the loss, others managed to see the funny side – and some brilliant memes were born…

It was the day that England could finally have brought ‘football home’.

But during a tense final against Spain for the UEFA European Football Championship – aka, the Euros – on Sunday evening (July 14), the men’s soccer squad failed to pull it out of the bag.

The team, led by captain Harry Kane and managed by Gareth Southgate, lost in a 2-1 defeat to the Spanish side, which consisted of players such as 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

While the nation mourned, some did see the funny side – and social media was rife with memes from the match.

Here are our favorites…

There were plenty of Tweets in reference to David Baddiel and Frank Skinner’s song, Three Lions, in which they sing ‘football’s coming home’

Which even Baddiel apparently no longer believes

The Internet was obsessed with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s facial expressions

And midfielder Phil Foden’s

But the Spanish side couldn’t go without a little ribbing too

One thing is for certain – we must protect right winger Bukayo Saka at all costs

Of course, Charli XCX’s album of the summer, Brat, had to make an appearance somewhere

And others couldn’t let go of Katy Perry’s dreadful ‘satirical’ new song, Woman’s World

Some thought the win was extremely unjust – as Spain already appear to have it all

Others simply got swept up in the camaraderie of the whole thing – and urged the nation’s pubs to give us more

Some really helpful managerial advice was shared

Although the English mourned their loss, it can’t be said that the rest of the United Kingdom felt sorry for them…

(Which is fair enough, as some dealt with the defeat in a very childish manner)

Some couldn’t resist going the historical route

Though it was great to see that the photographers gave the squad such a dignified ending

A lot of people had just had enough, and were ready to go back to being fair-weather fans to save themselves the heartache

Especially as the city’s Lime Bikes – electric bicycles you can hire across London – had an unusual new development

Whereas others were prepared to comfort the team

While it didn’t ‘come home’ (again) for the men’s squad, at least the Lionesses have got the right idea – after taking home the trophy in 2022

And people were more than happy to bid farewell to the soccer until next time – because there is more important business to now be getting on with!
