Upcoming Netflix romantic drama Enigma Variations has put together a star-studded cast – here is all we know about the show based on a bestselling book.

For fans of modern romantic drama, Netflix has become something of a go-to place, with successes such as Call Me by Your Name in the recent past. Now, the streamer is putting together another show that is set to repeat the success.
Enigma Variations is another modern love story, and there is a stellar cast being put together including some of the hottest young actors in the business.
The limited series is yet to start production but there is already considerable hype behind it, not just because of the cast but also because it comes from the pen of a very successful author.
Here is all we know about Enigma Variations.
What is Enigma Variations about?
The logline for the show gives a good indication of what viewers can expect. It tells the story of Paul, a man who is “remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him over the course of six transformative years. It is an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love – and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?”
The story takes place in Italy, New York and New England.
Who is in Enigma Variations?
There is a star-studded cast being assembled for Enigma Variations. Aron Taylor-Johnson is leading the cast, and he’s best known for 28 Years Later and Nosferatu. He has also been constantly linked with the James Bond role over the past couple of years.
Other names confirmed for the series include Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, Tomb Raider) as Claire, Riley Keough (Diasy Jones and the Six) as Maud, Sarah Pidgeon (Love Sotry, Honeymoon with Harry) as Chloe, Devon Terrell (Barry, The Assassin) as Manfred, Carl Clemons-Hopkins as Noah and Juliana Canfield (F.A.S.T, Stereophonic) as Allie.
Is Enigma Variations based on a book?
Yes it is. The original book is a bestseller by Andre Aciman, first published in 2017. The story is episodic and was praised for how he didn’t rehash previous novels but went for something bolder.
When the book was published, it received rave reviews. For instance, Paul Lisicky of the New York Times called it a “magnificent, living thing”, while Michael Upchurch of The Boston Globe wrote, “is there any writer out there who can conjure the seismic swings and loop-the-loop giddiness of sexual infatuation in the way that Andre Aciman can?”
Who is behind the show?
The show is being developed by studio Media Res, which has had successes with The Morning Show and Pachinko.
Amanda Kate Shuman is acting as showrunner, writer and executive producer on the show, while Oliver Hermanus is directing (and exec producing). Andre Aciman is also an executive producer.
When and where can we see Enigma Variations?
While the show will be on Netflix, we haven’t been given a release date yet. However, given production has yet to begin, a release date of late 2027 or early 2028 seems likely.
