Daisy Ridley has already joined the ranks of Star Wars royalty alongside Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. But she’s back again and set to star in a new Star Wars movie, currently titled Star Wars: New Jedi Order. Ridley will reprise her role as Rey. The actress’ reprisal was announced in April 2023. In 2015, Ridley made her debut as Rey in The Force Awakens.
The three Star Wars films she appeared in, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise Of Skywalker grossed $4.4 billion at the box office worldwide. The critical reception to the trilogy was mixed. Each film’s box office diminished with each release, but the trilogy was still as lucrative as George Lucas’ films. Each film also has over 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and is generally loved by audiences.
A sequel was inevitable because the films made so much money, but also because the franchise has been on hiatus since 2019. Therefore, it would make sense for Rey to return. The character of Rey was created for the sequel trilogy as the female lead by J.J Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. Rey is a scavenger living in Jakkau when we first meet her.
As she develops, she becomes stronger and stronger and goes on to face Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). The franchise is no longer on hiatus and will return soon with Ridley at the helm of a new Star Wars movie. We have all the details here.
When is New Jedi Order Coming Out?
The rumors around the release date of the New Jedi Order are rampant. Some rumors suggested a Christmas 2026 release date, but Ridley appeared to shut down those rumors in October.
In an interview with The Playlist’s Discourse podcast, Ridley was asked about the rumored release date, where she said, “We don’t have a date.” The actress continued by saying she thinks that “the creative process is one that is really a journey”.
Filming has reportedly already been delayed because of different things, and writer Steven Knight exited the project months ago, although we can’t confirm the reasoning.
Other writers exiting the Star Wars universe may’ve delayed the film’s filming and potential release date. In 2023 Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson also left the project. According to Variety, Lindelof said to Esquire: “I was in more than talks to join the Star Wars universe,” he continued, “I joined the Star Wars universe and was asked to leave.”
Development for the film has been in the works since 2022, much different from Ridley’s other Star Wars films. In The Force Awakens, development began in late 2012, and production started in April 2014 and ended in November of that year. A year later in December 2015, the film was released.
That’s a 3-year timeline, whereas New Jedi Order has almost passed that mark, and filming hasn’t begun yet.
Who is Starring in New Jedi Order?
We know Ridley is confirmed for the new Star Wars movie and is excited to return to playing Rey. In the previously mentioned interview, she said: “And I’m genuinely excited. And I have said I’m very excited, but I do mean I’m excited about what’s coming. And I think we have the luxury of making sure that this is the right”.
However, at the time of writing nobody else has been confirmed or announced to be joining the cast. The movie’s plot will reportedly take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Rey will be training a new generation of Jedis from lessons she learned from Luke Skywalker and the Jedi Order’s history.
Assuming that is true, we may see Skywalker in some capacity and new trainee Jedis, although their roles haven’t been cast or announced yet.
Fans would love to see John Boyega and Oscar Isaac return as Finn and Poe Dameron. The two have been open about reprising their roles, but nothing is set in stone yet! Returning as a writer is George Lucas, according to IMDB.
The director of the new Star Wars movie is also new to the franchise and will be Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed some of the 3 Bahadur Pakistani movies. Previously Abrams was usually the one who would direct the films.
As for producers, we aren’t sure if Kathleen Kennedy is returning. Kennedy was a fixture in the sequel trilogy. However, she is expected to do as she is the president of LucasFilm. For context, LucasFilm is producing the film.
What Could the plot of the new Star Wars movie be?
The plot for the New Jedi Order is still under wraps. We did hear we’d see Rey training young Jedis, but that hasn’t been confirmed by Disney or anyone involved.
Rey emerged as a hero in The Rise Of Skywalker, positioning the plot of the New Jedi Order to maybe explore her new role in connection to the late Luke and Leia. Alternatively, she might confront a new threat that opens opportunities for other actors from the sequel trilogy to reprise their prominent roles.
Fan Theories
Fans have speculated about what could happen. Many fans have hoped for a new story to take charge, with the main characters gone from the franchise. One fan wrote on Reddit: “Tell new stories with the newer characters, with a sprinkle of the likes of Chewbacca, Lando, and the droids we’ve been looking for”. On Star Wars fansites, speculation has surrounded Rey’s role.
Another fan wrote about their plot guesses for the movie. “I’d wager Rey’s character arc will be taking on the responsibility of rebuilding the Jedi while probably also having to learn that she can’t shoulder the entire burden herself”.
Themes of the new Star Wars movie
If the plot rumors are true, themes of restoration and redemption will likely shape the story. Hope will likely flourish as well, aligning with the term “New Order.” The story might even focus on overcoming obstacles, such as old or new enemies, that threaten the creation of the New Jedi Order. Of course, this is just our guess.
When will the trailer for the movie drop?
