- Amanda Seyfried – who played Sophie in the Mamma Mia franchise – says she would like Sabrina Carpenter to star in the next movie
- Although the third film is yet to be confirmed, Seyfried revealed she would love for Carpenter to play her daughter
- Christine Baranski revealed that she had heard the ‘narrative plot line’ from writer Judy Craymer

She’s currently wowing crowds on the US leg of her Short n’ Sweet tour.
But now Sabrina Carpenter is being eyed up for another career move – by none other than Amanda Seyfried.
The actor, 38, has expressed her desire to see Carpenter, 25, play her daughter in the next Mamma Mia movie.
The films, which are based on the songs of Swedish pop group ABBA, featured a string of Hollywood A Listers, including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters – and even global megastar Cher.
Seyfried – who plays Streep’s daughter Sophie in the movie franchise – told ABC News, “Mamma Mia 3, let’s go baby. Everybody says it’s gonna happen. But I mean, I haven’t seen a script.”
Although Seyfried is only 13 years older than Carpenter, it was pointed out that age is just a construct.
“You’re right, actually, [it] doesn’t matter,” agreed Seyfried. “You know what? Old age makeup for me. That’s what it will be. … I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. I’m a big fan.”
The comments came just days after Carpenter covered the movie’s title track at her tour date at Madison Square Garden.
Of course, fans went wild for Seyfried’s words.
“Omg I love this idea – imagining Meryl, Amanda and Sabrina… that’s three generations of beautiful women. And also, Sabrina can sing for the musical,” wrote one fan via Twitter/X. “I love how everyone is on the Sabrina carpenter train. She honestly deserves it. Such a breath of fresh air,” said another.
While someone else claimed that Sabrina is “officially the IT girl now”, others referenced a track from her latest album, begging producers to “please please please make it happen”.
“This would be the most Mamma Mia thing to happen in Mamma Mia 3,” joked another.
‘They are planning Mamma Mia 3!’
Although the last movie, starring Lily James, hit our screens six years ago, rumors have recently begun swirling that the third film is in the works – with Christine Baranski all but confirming the development.
The actor – who plays Tanya in the movies – weighed in on the ‘will they, won’t they’ rumors, and revealed she had recently spent time with Judy Craymer, who produced the films.
“I was in London with Judy at our favorite watering hole, she is planning Mamma Mia 3,” Baranski said. “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say!
“But, it’s not like, ‘Oh, I wish it could happen!’ Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”
“People are drawn to happiness and to joy, not doom and gloom. Mamma Mia made so many millions of people around the world happy.”
