- Butler was rumoured to be playing Patrick Bateman in upcoming remake
- Casting director from original film doesn’t believe Butler is the right choice
- Luca Guadagnino will direct new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis classic

While Bret Easton Ellis may have already dismissed the reports of Austin Butler being cast as Patrick Bateman in the upcoming American Psycho remake as ‘fake news’, the original film’s casting director doesn’t believe the Elvis star would be suitable for the role, anyway.
No sooner had Luca Guadagnino’s remake of the 2000 Mary Harron adaptation been announced, that many members of the media were attaching Butler to the project. While that was quickly dismissed, Kerry Barden, the casting director from the 2000 film, has now added that Butler would be better suited for another role in the movie.
Austin Butler – Too Handsome To Dance To Huey Lewis?
“I would cast Austin in Jared’s role because he’s that beautiful, and that’s why we cast Jared, is because he’s that beautiful,” Barden told The Hollywood Reporter. “Jared is certainly a great actor as well, and obviously, Austin has a lot of depth as an actor, too. But not every person has that kind of beauty.”
The controversial 1991 novel, which focused on the descent into murderous madness of Manhattan yuppie Patrick Bateman, was so gratuitously violent that several countries censored it. It would eventually be adapted into a film in 2000. Christian Bale memorably played the lead role of Bateman.
But now Guadagnino, with the help of a new script devised by Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum, Contagion) is set to adapt the early ’90s cult classic into a newly imagined film for Lionsgate.
“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate.” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. “Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
American Psycho Fans Have Been Fantasy Casting Since New Adaptation Announcement
Fans of the novel and the 2000 adaptation have been fantasy casting Guadagnino’s version for months already. The likes of Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jacob Elordi, Nicholas Chavez and Timothee Chalamet have all been suggested for the Bateman part.
No official casting is forthcoming at this moment in time. Filming is rumoured to begin later this year, however.
