Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn presented two awards at the 2025 Oscars. The duo presented the awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short Film. Winning Best Animated Feature was Flow and the Best Animated Short Film was won by In the Shadow of the Cypress.

What happened between Andrew Garfield and Goldie Hawn?
During the two’s speech onstage, Garfield brought his presenting partner to tears when he addressed her. The actor starts by saying that Hawn impacted his mother’s life when she was alive. Sadly Garfield’s mother Lynn Garfield passed away in 2019 from pancreatic cancer. He said of Hawn’s impact on his mother that she brought her “the most joy, the most comfort”.
He continued, “And tonight, I feel very lucky because I get to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. That person is Goldie Hawn.” The 41-year-old held Hawn’s hand as he did so, and she was almost reduced to tears by the act.
How did Goldie Hawn respond?
Hawn gave a perfect but short response. She looked at Garfield and said, “Thank you so much, that really touches me.”
I was so lucky [to] make movies… and make people laugh,” she continued. “And maybe some didn’t, but that’s okay.”
Does Andrew Garfield speak about his mother?
Yes, Garfield has spoken a lot about the pain and his feelings about losing his mother. In October 2024, he confessed to Sesame Street star (yes really) Elmo that he missed his mother.
The sketch starts with Elmo asking the We Live In Time star how he is doing, to which Garfield responds that he is “doing ok.” About his mother, he says: “I’m just thinking about my mom. She passed away not too long ago. And I just miss her, I miss her a lot.”
A message from the sketch encourages fans to check in on each other and that missing their loved ones is normal.
He continues, “When I miss her I remember it’s because she made me so happy, I can celebrate her and miss her at the same time”.
In his recent movie, We Live In Time, which was released in January 2025, Garfield plays a man who marries a young woman (Florence Pugh) and loses her to cancer.
During press for that movie, he also spoke a bit about how he related to the role, given the similarities to his real life.
