- Apple rumored to be working on self-healing technology for screens
- Part of the tech giant’s plans to develop a foldable iPhone
- Apple has previously talked of self-healing technology but not for foldable iPhones

Apple could be working on a solution that could see the end of an age-old but annoying problem – the cracked iPhone screen.
Self-healing screens
It has been reported that Apple is working on developing a material that can ‘self-heal’ which could coat the screen and be able to fill a dent or scratch. In a new patent from Apple – called Electronic Devices with Flexible Display Cover Layers – designs show that, by applying heat, light or an electrical current to the screen, it can stimulate a process whereby the screen ‘heals’ itself. However, there is also an assertion that it could heal without being prompted by an external source.
The patent describes the technology as “a polymer or any other desired material having self-healing properties.”
Apple has mentioned self-healing technology in the past, but not in regard to foldable phones.
Foldable iPhone
This could all be part of Apple’s work to develop a foldable iPhone. Rival manufacturers such as Samsung and Google already have foldable phones on the market, which feature thinner screens than standard smartphones, which reduces the crease in the middle. However, but by being thinner, it does make them more prone to cracks, scratches and the like – hence Apple’s possible solution.
In its patent, Apple included foldable iPhone prototypes, giving hope that one may be available perhaps by 2026. Apple has taken its time with the development of this, possibly because they want to ensure the product is as high quality as possible – and better than the competition.
There is also the potential for this technology to be used in other devices such as laptops or watches – two other devices that are prone to cracks and scratches.
