Ari Aster has enjoyed an incredibly prolific last decade. The writer and director has been blazing a trail through independent cinema with his grotesque blend of graphic violence, occult rituals and, well, gigantic phallic father figures.
As the mind behind cult classics like Hereditary and Midsommar, Aster has become one of Hollywood’s most talked about filmmakers. Working frequently with A24, the 38-year-old also helmed 2023’s surrealist tragicomedy Beau Is Afraid. His upcoming film, Eddington, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler and Emma Stone, will premiere at next month’s Cannes Film Festival.
Aster has also produced as well as direct, though. In 2023 he produced satirical comedy-drama Dream Scenario, starring Nicolas Cage and Michael Cera. He also served as executive producer on upcoming comedy horror Death of a Unicorn, featuring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming sci-fi comedy, Bugonia, will also be produced by Aster and will star Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons and Alicia Silverstone.

Little is actually known about how much Aster is worth or what he has earned throughout his career. Although his film’s box office takings are public record. The director signed a first-look TV deal with A24 in 2021, off the back-to-back successes of Hereditary and Midsommar.
As of 2023, in which Aster’s latest film, Beau Is Afraid, was released, it was estimated that Aster was worth somewhere in the region of $5 million. Of course, two years removed from that and with several production credits and another directorial and screenwriter credit to his name for Eddington, it is probably safe to predict that Aster’s net worth now stands somewhere in the region of the $10 million bracket.

In 2018, Hereditary took a worldwide gross of $82.8 million (against a production budget of $10 million). At the time it was A24’s highest grossing movie of all time, until Everything Everywhere All At Once surpassed it in 2022. A year after Hereditary’s release, Midsommar grossed $48 million worldwide, against a production budget of $9 million. Despite the overwhelming box office success of his first two A24 efforts, Aster could not repeat the trick with Beau Is Afraid, which returned just $12.3 million against a much bigger production budget of $35 million.
In total, Aster’s movies have so far generated $143.1 million at box offices across the globe, with a combined production total of $54 million. Given the star power of his upcoming western comedy Eddington, plus the addition of buzz that will emanate from competing at Cannes, Aster and A24 will be hoping for big returns from his fourth picture.
