- Black Myth: Wukong lost GOTY to Astro Bot despite multiple nominations
- Fans accuse favoritism, while PlayStation credits player votes
- The game remains a historic milestone for China’s gaming industry

Black Myth: Wukong, one of the most anticipated games of the year, faced disappointment at both The Game Awards (TGA) and PlayStation’s end-of-year awards.
Faced Setback Twice
The game couldn’t secure the Game of the year title (GOTY), despite of receiving multiple nominations. Instead, Astro Bot remained as winner and took home both trophies— GOTY at Game Awards 2024 and PlayStation’s Game of the year award for being the best PS5 installment, voted by 1.6 million players.
Although Black Myth: Wuong got the second place, winning gold trophy, fans voiced their frustration, saying that company gave Astro Bot an edge as it originally crafted this installment. However, PlayStation clarified that the winners were determined solely by player votes.
At The Game Awards, Black Myth: Wukong earned nominations in four prestigious categories: Best Action Game, Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, and Game of the Year.
Unacceptable Loss
It managed to win the Best Action Game and Players’ Voice categories, but the defeat in the GOTY category left its fans and developers dissatisfied. Feng Ji, speaking through a post on Weibo, mentioned,
“The four nominations for Black Myth: Wukong (Best Action Game, Best Art Direction, Best Game Direction, and Game of the Year) are all the first in China. In the end, it won the Best Action and Player’s Voice, especially the Player’s Voice, which is gratifying. But I must admit that there are disappointments and regrets, and more of them are giving up illusions. The games nominated this year are all excellent, but I really don’t understand the selection criteria for this year’s Game of the Year. I came here for nothing!”
Feng Ji expressed the dismay, saying,
“It’s normal to be a little angry when you are so confident but not recognized by others”
Further acknowledged the dejected remarks made by the community. He said,
“I can fully understand these unwillingness and sympathize with these unhappiness, because I know that behind these emotions, it is not pain and malice, but self-esteem and self-confidence”
Black Myth: Wukong’s journey has been a ride of appreciation and criticism, still it acheived the significant milestone as the first AAA, Western-style console, successfully attained the recognition on global level.
Setting aside the loss and win scenario the game will continue to be an epitome of perfection in the Chinese gaming industry, setting standard for the upcoming games.
