There was a lot for Chicago Bears fans to be frustrated about following their last-minute Thanksgiving defeat to the Detroit Lions. And a lot for Caleb Williams in particular to be frustrated about.

Not only was the Bears quarterback a focal point of some extremely questionable time management in the dying seconds of the loss (no timeout? Really, Matt Eberflus?), he was also the recipient of a low tackle by Lions linebacker Jack Campbell that sent Williams to the medical tent.

While Williams would return shortly after and throw a touchdown as the Bears mounted an impressive comeback (albeit one that would fall infuriatingly short for their fans), the hit from Campbell was a sore point for the quarterback, who let his feelings be known during a post-game interview with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“Um, knee’s fine. Yeah, I—that play was funky… I didn’t really appreciate the play. He just kind of dove straight at my knee. So I didn’t really get that. Definitely kind of frustrated about that one, just because, you know, whatever. Yeah, knee’s good. Nothing wrong with it. Think I just got a bruise. But the play was—the play was funky.”

The Bears had been trailing 23-7 late in the third quarter before Williams sprung to life, throwing three touchdowns. The Chicago rookie had taken his team to within touching distance of either tying the game or taking the lead. However, with 36 seconds remaining and Chicago facing second-and-20 at the Lions’ 35-yard line, the Bears coaching staff decided against using their timeout to stop the clock and instead opted to line up and run a play. Once everyone had got into position and Williams had made the snap, there were only six seconds left on the clock and, ultimately, the Bear missed a golden opportunity to score a hugely unlikely victory over the Super Bowl favourites.
