The success of the Super Mario Movie has inevitably meant that a sequel is in the works, but could we have a whole universe of interconnected Nintendo franchise films? We could if Chris Pratt gets his way.

So much content

Pratt, who provides the voice of the titular plumber in the Illumination film, has spoken recently to Screen Rant about his desire for a world of interconnected Nintendo movies.

“There’s so much to explore,” Pratt said. “There are decades worth of [games] to explore, not only with Mario and Peach and Donkey Kong and Luigi and Bowser and Yoshi… I was such a Nintendo head growing up, so just thinking about how everything from Legend of Zelda to the entire Nintendo cinematic universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters that I love? I mean, there’s really no limit.”

As he said, there is no shortage of potential content. The world of Mario has been going for more than 40 years and there are a huge roster of characters and storylines from games that could be used.

Universe popularity

Cinematic universes have become increasingly popular in recent years. The most well-known – and successful – is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which now has well over 20 films and numerous TV shows that are all part of the same universe.

Another well-known universe is the Conjuring universe. This horror franchise now has eight films in its canon, starting with The Conjuring in 2013, with The Nun II the latest addition in September last year.

Even TV shows are getting in on the act – the recently announced successor series of The Office is set in the same universe as Dunder Mifflin, but the new show will have an entirely new cast. Also Nintendo has provided an update on the Switch 2 release date, though there are rumors that the release could be delayed until 2025.

So while for now we have to content ourselves with Super Mario 2 in 2026, as well as a live-action version of The Legend of Zelda to come, maybe, just maybe, we could be seeing a lot more of Mario and friends on the big screen in years to come. The second Super Mario movie is slated for release in 2026.
