James Van Der Beek, star of Dawson’s Creek, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer but added that there is “reason for optimism”.
Van Der Beek, 47, told People of his bowel cancer – also known as colorectal cancer – diagnosis. “I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family. There’s reason for optimism and I’m feeling good.”
The actor, who is a father of six, also posted on Instagram about the news.
He noted that he had planned to make the announcement on his own terms, but brought forward the plan after he found out a tabloid was going to break the story.
He added that he will share more in the future.
What is bowel cancer?
Bowel cancer starts in the colon or rectum, which makes up the large intestine.
Van Der Beek’s cancer is one of the more common cancers – about 150,000 people are diagnosed with it every year in the US, according to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. It can be a life-threatening condition but is curable if found early.
The average age of diagnosis for bowel cancer in men and women is 66 but, as Van Der Beek demonstrates, it can develop earlier in life.
