The director of Alien: Romulus has hinted that if a sequel is made it could change direction from the first film and go to uncharted territory for the franchise.

Alien: Romulus was a box office success last year and is credited with helping to reinvigorate the Alien franchise. The film took more than $350 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

The film, directed by Fede Alvarez, focused on a crew of miners – rather than Ellen Ripley – and how a mission to loot a spaceship goes horribly wrong when they encounter the facehuggers and later Xenomorphs, which they then have to escape from.

Alien: Romulus sequel script

Talking to Empire, Fede Alvarez confirmed that he and Rodo Sayagues are working on a script for a sequel currently. However, while Alien: Romulus brought in strands from previous films, the sequel could go into new areas.

Although Alvarez hinted that Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny, who was introduced in Alien: Romulus, is likely to be central in the sequel. “I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before,” he said.

Only if it is worth it

But Alvarez also sounded a note of caution – a sequel is not guaranteed. He said a new film will only be made if the story is strong enough – and not just because they can make a sequel. “I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something worthy of the title,” he said.

Nevertheless, Alvarez said he was excited about the prospect of a sequel.

Given how much of an early stage the sequel is at, there is no indication of when it could go into production or hit theaters – if it indeed ever makes it off the page.

However, if you want a fix of Alien sooner, then Alien: Earth is coming to FX on Hulu this summer. The first time the Alien franchise has been seen on the small screen, Alien: Earth is set two years before Sigourney Weaver’s Lt. Ellen Ripley first faces off against a Xenomorph. Alien: Earth will see a group of soldiers accidentally stumble on an alien danger with world-changing potential. Read more about Alien: Earth here.
