Donald Trump wants to be the next pope after the death of Pope Francis aged 88 on Easter Monday.

The resident of the Oval Office is currently just over 100 days into his second presidency. Many fear he may attempt to run for a third time; an impossibility under the US Constitution, something he has had little regard for since being re-elected.

His administration has already detained people for exercising their first amendment rights, relied on executive orders to bring in radical shakeups like tariffs and threatened sovereign nations like Canada and Denmark.

“I’d like to be pope,” Trump joked to reporters. “That’d be my number one choice.”

This statement may also raise eyebrows for one more major reason: there is no evidence to suggest that Trump, who was raised Presbyterian, is eligible. Technically, all confirmed Catholic men are in the running but Protestants are definitely not allowed.

The Commander-in-Chief went on to clarify and soften his position by expressing his preference for who would be victorious in the papal conclave.

“I don’t have a preference. I might say we have a cardinal that happens to be out of a place called New York who is very good,” he said, speaking about Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

How did the internet react to Donald Trump saying he wanted to be pope?

Social media lit up at the President’s suggestion he wanted to be the next person to hold the papacy; a position that grants infallibility and being God’s representative on Earth.

One person remarked that Trump is “addicted to being worshipped.”

Another person dubbed it “offensive to many Catholics worldwide.”

Someone else called anyone thinking this was a viable thing was “in a cult.”

The fact that it was impossible was reiterated on X.
