- A Barbie sequel is said to be in its early stages
- Director Greta Gerwig and filmmaker Noah Baumbach have a story idea
- But what has Margot Robbie said about Barbie 2?

We might all be girls in a Barbie world again soon because Barbie 2 is in the works…supposedly. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Barbie director Greta Gerwig and filmmaker Noah Baumbach have finalized a story idea for Barbie 2.
The original Barbie film was very lucrative during its release in the summer of 2023. The film generated $1.4 billion at the box office and starred Margot Robbie as the live-action Barbie.

Robbie’s casting as Barbie was a social media phenomenon and created buzz for a Barbie sequel. The first movie’s story, written by Gerwig and Baumbach, saw Barbie’s journey from Barbieland to discovering the real world in LA and learning how to be human.
The Babylon star also produced the Barbie film. Despite the film’s money-making ability, it doesn’t seem like there has been a green light for it yet, although Robbie has praised her experience working on the Mattel production.
With a potential sequel in the works and hope for a Barbie 2, let’s recap everything that she has said about it.
What has Margot Robbie said about Barbie 2?

The first thing to state in the reaction to Barbie 2 is that the studio denies The Hollywood Reporter’s sequel claims. A representative for Gerwig and Baumbach said the report had “no legitimacy”. At the same, Warner Brothers also responded, declaring the reports about a Barbie sequel as “inaccurate”. Ouch.
On the other hand, straight from the horse’s mouth, Robbie’s response to a sequel also isn’t promising. The actress, who recently gave birth to her first child with husband Tom Ackerley, spoke to the Associated Press about a sequel in November 2023.

The 34-year-old said she felt like she and the team had exhausted everything they could from Barbie. She said: “We didn’t like – we didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
The mom of one also spoke about the importance of Barbie doing well as an original movie rather than a sequel or a prequel to other Barbie content.
What else has she said about a sequel?
Regarding a sequel, Robbie hasn’t spoken much about it despite fans demanding one. However, Mattel reportedly has plans to create a cinematic universe. Why wouldn’t that include one of their most lucrative brands, Barbie?
In an interview with Variety a few months later, the actress maintained her uncertainty about Barbie 2.
She said, “Everything went into Barbie — and that’s how Greta works. She finishes every movie on empty, feeling like she could never make another one because she put everything she had into that project. I don’t know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her or for us. I think Warner would agree. I don’t even know what more could look like. We want to make more films that have the same impact Barbie had. I don’t know if it has to be Barbie 2.”
Right now, both Gerwig and Robbie are busy. Gerwig is adapting The Chronicles of Narnia books for Netflix, while Robbie is working on several projects and embracing motherhood. She is producing and starring in a Wuthering Heights adaptation and producing a TV miniseries called Sirens.
Even if Robbie wanted to, she might not have time for Barbie 2 anytime soon.
Although rumors suggest a sequel is in its early stages, little is known about the story or cast. Barbie 2 could tell a different story under the same studio and creative team without Robbie.
As hard as it is to imagine another Barbie movie without her, we might need to accept that possibility. Either way, we’ll keep you updated on any Barbie 2 news.
