More than 25 years after the original film, a sequel to face-swapping action thriller Face/Off is being developed.

There has been talk of a Face/Off 2 on and off for some years, but it has now been confirmed to be in the early stages of development. Adam Wingard, who recently directed Godzilla x Kong, is on board to direct and is co-writing the script with Simon Barrett.

Speaking to io9, Wingard said development had been delayed by the Hollywood writer’s strike, but the plan is for a writer to work on the script before it goes back to him and Barrett to work on again.

The original Face/Off has become a cult classic. It starred John Travolta as an FBI agent who undergoes a face-swapping operating with a terrorist, played by Nicholas Cage, to try and find a hidden bomb before it goes off. Lots of identity-based drama then ensues.

What the plot of the sequel would be has, understandably, not been revealed yet, but you would guess it would involve face swapping in some form.

It is also not clear whether Travolta or Cage will return at this stage. Cage has previously hinted he would be open to appearing in a sequel, but there is the slight problem that in the first movie – spoiler alert – his character dies. Although as we all know, death is not necessarily the end in movies, and, given the face-swapping theme, anything is possible.

Pedro Pascal is another name in the frame – back in 2022, in an interview with GQ magazine, he said he would be interested in taking a role in a sequel.

But with a script still not finalised, it will be some time before a film hits cinemas – and it is not guaranteed that it will.
