Charli xcx spearheaded a huge cultural moment last summer, making lime green fashionable all over again with her massive album Brat. This summer, she’s on a victory lap playing shows and festivals across the world, but some fans wondered why she wasn’t headlining more big ticket events.

She is, however, headlining Primavera Sound in Madrid next month with fellow pop heavyweights Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan.

The artist performed at Coachella’s first weekend and, unsurprisingly, she drew a massive crowd. Her 55-minute set was a huge celebration of Bra and featured guest performances by Charli’s recent collaborators Troye Sivan and Lorde.

Later, at the afterparty on the Saturday night, she wore a sash reading ‘Miss Should Be Headliner’.

However, some fans on social media weren’t so keen on this. Some said they believed it was disrespectful towards Green Day, who were actually headlining that day.

“Charli xcx letting hype get to her head”

The sash prompted a lot of raised eyebrows online, particularly since Green Day has had a far longer career than Charli herself.

In addition, during their headline set, Green Day had drawn attention to current political events. The rock legends changed one of the lyrics in their hit Jesus Of Suburbia to “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine/Tales from another broken home.”

“i don’t even listen to either of the artists but in what world does charli xcx with exactly one or two hits deserve to be headliner of coachella over green day,” one X user wrote.

Another said: “even if you disagree and think charli should’ve headlined over green day, her wearing that sash is just like so insanely disrespectful to a pillar legacy act in the music industry like idk girl you could’ve just kept it classy and not worn it.”

“Charli xcx letting hype get to her head,” someone else said. “Green Day used their Coachella headliner slot to speak up for good. They are still bigger than her.”

A fourth user pointed out “the way charli could have done a cute bit and wore something that alludes to how green day is brat due to their name but no she had to be sour and bitter.”

“It’s just a joke”

Other people, on the other hand, didn’t think the sash should be taken so seriously.

“all this because charli wore a sash that jokes about wanting to be a headliner at coachella. when did we all get so insane. no sense of humor just calling women pathetic online because they have a sense of self and sense of humor,” one person said.

“i think some of yall are using this whole green day charli xcx thing for thinly veiled misogyny but that might just be me idk,” said another.

Another user wrote: “am i the only one that very clearly took charlis sash as a silly haha joke??? its the same vibes as sabrina’s nonsense outro when she said “coachella see you back here when i headline.”
