Disney has released the first shot of Jared Leto in the upcoming TRON: Ares film and confirmed that movie will be hitting cinemas in 2025.

This latest addition to the TRON franchise was hyped by Leto on X (previously Twitter), who wrote in a post: “ARE YOU READY?? TRON: ARES 2025. See you on the grid…”

This initial shot shows Leto in his black and red TRON outfit, which appears to stick to the classic franchise themes, which will no doubt please fans. He has a dark helmet on and a pistol on his right hip.

Filming of TRON: ARES is yet another to have been affected by the Hollywood writers and actors strikes of late last year, but filming has now resumed in Vancouver. Joachim Ronning is on directing duties and has previously spoke of his excitement at being part of the TRON franchise, saying the new film builds on the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling.

Details of the plot of TRON: ARES are scant at the moment, bar what Disney has released. Disney has said: “TRON: ARES follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings.”

Confirmed cast members include Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan and X-Files legend Gillian Anderson.

Also confirmed as being on board is TRON creator Steve Lisberger, who told the Hollywood Reporter he saw his role as being akin to “Obi-Wan” and to “say the one sentence that has an impact.” He doesn’t want to have too much input with the main writing and production team, but to provide some useful guidance.

TRON: ARES will be the third film in the franchise, following 1982’s TRON and 2010’s TRON: Legacy.
