When it comes to Gen X, you can always reliably find plenty of nostalgia soaked references to Nirvana and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 on their social media feeds and stories. Grunge music and ripping a sick virtual kickflip were pretty much all a teenager required in the ‘90s. So when Tony Hawk paid tribute to the late, great Kurt Cobain over their shared grandson, a lot of people in their mid-late 30s and early 40’s promptly lost their minds.

Back in October of 2023, Hawk’s son Riley married Francis Bean Cobain – the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love – and in September 2024, this merging of iconic ‘90s families added a next generation to the Cobain-Hawk family tree when Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk was born.

Over the weekend, when skateboarding icon Hawk took to his Instagram story to share a ticket stub from a Nirvana concert he attended in 1991, social media rapidly went into meltdown as Hawk lamented how Ronin will never meet his grunge revolutionary grandfather Kurt.

Hawk added a caption to the picture of the ticket, from October 20, 1991, saying, “Went straight from S.U.A.S event at Houston skatepark to this concert in 1991. It was transformative as live music can possibly be. We all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same.

“I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become. Meet her devoted, caring husband and hold our wondrous grandchild.”

Tragically, Cobain took his own life in April, 1994, when Frances was just 19-months-old. With Nirvana, however, he left behind one of the most seminal legacies in rock and roll history and has continued to be an icon in the 31 years since his untimely passing.

Naturally, when all-time great skateboarder Hawk, who’s video game franchise became one of the most wildly successful in history between 1999-2007, paid his tribute to Kurt, reminding fans around the world that the pair share a grandson, social media struggled to keep its cool.

That kid is going to begin an era defining video game franchise one day AND write a seminal soundtrack to accompany it.
