A teaser video was released to mark the start of production which showed an office for Monarch, the organization that tracks the giant city-destroying monsters called Titans.

The camera pans to a computer screen, revealing a real-world hotline fans can call to hear an automated message. The number, cleverly chosen, is (240) MON-ARCH, which translates to 240-666-2724.

If called, a recorded voice memo says “Your help reporting titan sightings plays a critical role in keeping our world safe” before prompting the listener to sign up for text updates about the film.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova was revealed as the name of the sequel and is being directed by Grant Sputore. It marks the third film in the series and the sixth overall in the Monsterverse franchise. It is set for release in theaters on 26 March 2027.

Godzilla X Kong history

The Monsterverse franchise began in 2014 with Godzilla, reintroducing the iconic monster to a new generation after a long absence from screens. The creature’s last major appearance had been in Roland Emmerich’s 1998 film, a critically panned Hollywood take that disappointed fans of the original.

In 2017, Kong: Skull Island expanded the universe, introducing Kong – the enormous, destructive ape – and teasing a future showdown between the two legendary titans.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters followed in 2019, ramping up the monster action and introducing new titans like King Ghidorah, a colossal three-headed extraterrestrial dragon who challenged Godzilla’s dominance.

The long-anticipated clash came in Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), where the titans finally went head-to-head in a battle. However, their fight ultimately made way for an even greater threat in Mechagodzilla – robotic doppelganger of Godzilla – forcing Godzilla and Kong to work together to save humanity.

The saga continued with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), in which the two rivals are forced to join forces again. Their alliance this time tested by a new villain from the Hollow Earth – Skar King – a powerful and evil titan whose threat to the planet is  anything stronger than they’ve faced before.

Plot details are mostly under wraps for the new film, but eagle-eyed viewers will notice from the teaser that the film is set in Sedona, Arizona. This is where Scylla – the giant armored crab-like sea monster – was first awakened in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Therefore, it suggests we might be seeing more of the cephalopod in the upcoming film.

Last year’s blockbuster ended with Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra – the enormous moth who had allied with both titans –  on the same page and returning to their respective domains after defeating the Skar King. While they have gone their separate ways for now, it’s still unclear what lies ahead for them, and whether Mothra will make a return.

The cast includes the Last Of Us breakout star Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, and Dan Stevens, who reprises his role as Monarch veterinarian Trapper Beasley from last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

To date, the Monsterverse franchise has grossed over $2.5 billion worldwide at the box office. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the highest-grossing installment, earning over $571 million globally. It is closely followed by the franchise’s second film, Kong: Skull Island, which brought in $568 million worldwide.
