Greg Reisdorf, the director at Sledgehammer Games, has bid farewell after contributing for 15 years and specially shaped the Call of Duty franchise by providing his creative summaries.
Greg’s Journey at Sledgehammer Games
Greg took to x to share this news on 13 January, mentioning that
“Friday was my last day at Sledgehammer Games after 15 years. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities and amazing developers I worked with. Here’s a thread sharing some of my favorite features I worked on during my time.”
He shared the thread highlighting his core projects and started the journey at Sledgehammer in 2011 with the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Undoubtedly, his innovative approach and dedication remained significant in the evolution of the series and contributed to games like MW 3, Advanced Warfare WWII, Vanguard, and more.
Founded in 2009, Sledgehammer Games came into existence in 2009 and became quite important for the Call of Duty franchise. Reisdorf said that in MW3 (2011), he assisted in designing the “Scorched Earth” and “Blood Brothers” mission, the intense one. He tweeted,
“ I also created the sequence where Soap is on a gurney. Designing where Yuri’s little bird would land, adding adrenaline injections, and having a helicopter crash through the wall made it one of the most chaotic and fun moments I’ve worked on.”
A Legacy of Innovation in Call of Duty
Another notable contribution include the introduction of moves like boost jump and dodging in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, crafted distinct weapons and multiplayer maps,
“weapon loot in AW was a new system,” he said about balancing the weapon properties. Moreover, he worked on the “Pick 13,” but he felt assured, stating that, “IMO, Pick 13 should not have happened. Streaks are rewards and should not be valued against required items like primary and secondary weapons.”
Furthermore, he did work for the COD: WW2, and it was equally praiseworthy, helped fix the division system that restricted weapons access to specific classes at the launch. The change in the system offered players a free and flexible playing environment.
His work on Call of Duty: WW2 was equally impactful. Although the Division system at launch restricted weapon access to specific classes, Reisdorf was pleased when the decision was reversed.
This change made the game more flexible and player-friendly, proving Reisdorf’s dedication to player experience. He also wrote about the customization options,
“WWII factions initially allowed only Allied customization. With DLC, players could change Axis soldiers to Valkyrie-inspired soldiers,”
And continued saying that despite this option, there should be a difference so things may not get mixed. In Vanguard, Reisdorf remained more focused on designing the amusing maps, more like the ones offering a three-lane structure— a fan favorite.
Then, in MW3 (2023), he reconstructed the classic maps from older installments and created fun modes like Snowfight and Infectious Holiday. Players acknowledged his efforts and hard work and appreciated him for playing a central role in the industry.
While this departure is a surprise for all, his ultimate creativity will always be remembered. Now, fans are excited to see him moving forward in his career journey and his future remarkable projects.
