A new Harry Potter TV show is in the works that promises to be “more in-depth” than the hugely popular movie adaptations that have long delighted audiences.

Confirmed back in April 2024, this new small-screen take on author J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World is set to hit HBO at some point in 2026.

The show will feature a brand new cast tasked with bringing Hogwarts BFFs Harry, Ron and Hermione to life, along with new stars portraying each of the characters in Rowling’s sprawling, seven-part supernatural story.

Speaking to Variety at Mipcom in Cannes, Warner Bros. TV Group’s chairman and CEO, Channing Dungey, shed a little more light on a project that’s currently better protected than a Horcrux.

“Unbelievable dream”

Explaining that getting the chance to reimagine Rowling’s stories was an “unbelievable dream,” Dungey added, “as somebody who is a huge fan of the books, the opportunity to get to explore them in a little bit more in-depth that you can in just a two-hour film… that’s the whole reason we’re on this journey.”

Elsewhere in the same chat, the CEO also revealed that the show’s “writing staff was in place and they’re doing what they need to do, and casting calls have opened up in the U.K. and Ireland, so the process is moving along.”

Open casting for the show debuted earlier this year, inviting children between the ages of 9 and 11 from the UK and Ireland to throw their wizard and witch hats in the ring to be in with a chance of starring.

The original Harry Potter franchise started in 2001 with director Chris Columbus’ adaptation of Rowling’s first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The film was released four years after the book hit shelves and starred Daniel Radcliffe as Harry and Emma Watson and Rupert Grint as his pals Hermione and Ron.

How to watch the Harry Potter TV show

Originally, the upcoming Harry Potter TV series was set to debut on streamer MAX as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s digital offering. However, a few months after this was announced, the company instead decided to move the series to HBO.

It’s here where fans will ultimately find the series when it’s ready to be watched.

According to Casey Boys, HBO & MAX Content’s Chairman and CEO, the new Harry Potter series will be a “faithful adaptation” and “dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

While little else is known about the project, we do know that Succession helmer Mark Mylod is expected to direct a handful of its episodes.
