Chaos: The Manson Murders has landed on streaming and has everyone talking about one of America’s most notorious cults. The documentary is based on the 2019 non-fiction book written by Dan Piepenbring and Tom O’Neill. The difference in the book is that it doesn’t just detail the story of the Manson family but also provides motives for some of their murders. Streaming services have been eager to cash in on true crime recently, successes like the Gabby Petito documentary have shown a market for it.
Who was the Manson family?

The Manson family was a cult led by Charles Manson in the late 1960s and 1970s. The cult resided in California. They were known for committing multiple murders. Manson convinced many of his members to take part in the murders. On record, the family was known to have murdered at least nine people, including famous actress Sharon Tate.

The group believed in Manson’s manic apocalyptic vision of the Helter Skelter and was radicalized by his teachings. Helter Skelter refers to the title of a song by The Beatles. Essentially Manson believed there was an impending race war.
In January 1971 Manson and three other members of the Manson family were convicted for the murders of seven people, one of whom was Tate.
What is Chaos about?
Errol Morris’ documentary was made to question the story of the Manson family murders. According to Netflix, it “explores the darkest corners of recent history to unpack the potential conspiracy surrounding the killings”. The documentary also delves into questioning powerful institutions and the political climate at the time. During the murders, it was a time of counterculture and a rise in the civil rights movement.
Morris’ documentary uses the book to shed light on some of the theories as to why they chose to do the murders, and how Manson convinced his members to kill. It delves a bit into the alleged – and possible – influence the government could’ve had on Manson’s motive to murder.
