A planned biopic focusing on the early years of Hulk Hogan will now not be progressed, the film’s director has confirmed.

Not coming together

The film, for which Chris Hemsworth had reportedly signed on to play the wrestler, had been in development for some time but has now been cancelled.

Speaking to Variety, Todd Philips confirmed that the project was cancelled. “I love what we were trying to do, but that’s not going to come together for me.”

The film was set to focus on Hogan’s early years in wrestling and how he rose to fame in the 1980s, before he achieved global stardom as one of the faces of WWF (as it was then – now WWE). Hogan’s more recent scandals and troubles would not be touched on.

Long development

The project had been in development since 2019, with Hemsworth speaking in interviews about his interest in professional wrestling and how he was working to bulk up for the role – even more so that he did for when he played Thor in numerous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the first indication that there was trouble with the project came last year when Hogan revealed on Chris Van Vliet’s podcast that Netflix had ended its involvement due to a “business situation”.

Hogan added he had already moved on and was hopeful that the movie would still happen. However, it appears that it has now ended, although Philips didn’t offer any further insight into why.

But there is another Hogan movie in the works, which will focus on the wrestler’s battle with Gawker Media. Titled ‘Killing Gawker’, Ben Affleck is rumored to be lined up to star in it.
