The iconic fedora worn by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom has just been sold at auction for a staggering amount.
Iconic prop
The brown felt fedora, which was made specially for the film – another hat was used in the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark – sold for $630,000 at the auction in Los Angeles. It was seen in iconic early scenes in the film, such as when Jones, Willie and Short Round jump from a crashing plane into an inflatable raft.
It was previously owned by Dean Ferrandini, who also wore the hat as Ford’s stunt double on the 1984 film. Ferrandini passed away last year. It has not been revealed who was the winning bidder.
According to the BBC, the fedora was made by the Herbert Johnson Hat Company, based in London. The makers paid great attention to detail too – in the inside lining are gold monogrammed initials ‘IJ’.
This is not the first hat won by Ford to sell for a six-figure sum. In 2021, another fedora worn in Temple of Doom sold at auction for $300,000, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Big business
Indiana Jones’ hat was one of many film memorabilia lots that were auctioned by Propstore. Other notable lots included an imperial scout trooper helmet, worn in Return of the Jedi, which sold for $315,000, and a light-up wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban, which sold for $53,550.
The auction demonstrates again how film memorabilia is big business. For instance, recently, Princess Leia’s iconic bikini sold for $175,000 at auction.
