James Gunn is putting the finishing touches on his Superman film. In fact, he’s already aired it for lucky audiences ahead of its summer 2025 release.

These fans would be among the first to see David Corenswet take on the coveted role of Krypton’s last son. The last time he was seen on the big screen was in Zack Snyder’s divisive DC Cinematic universe where Henry Cavill played the role in films like Man of Steel and a Justice League two-parter.

However, according to some sources cited online, first reactions to Gunn’s take on DC’s hero have been conflicting. While each should be taken with a hefty pinch of salt and classified firmly as rumor at such early stages, these reports point towards highs, lows and surprise villains.

One of the first early reports to Gunn’s Superman came from Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider. Whilst speaking on his podcast The Hot Mic, he highlighted a correction to a previous positive comment that he had made about the movie.

“I got a call from my best source after that newsletter,” explained Sneider. “He said, ‘Great newsletter tonight. You got one thing wrong. And that’s about Superman, which I continue to hear is ‘terrible.'”

These reports lay in stark contrast to thoughts shared by Canadian film critic John Campea, who said “the exact opposite” on his podcast, The John Campea Show. “I’ve heard [Superman’s] tremendously good,” he added, pointing towards its humor and emotional heft.

Surprise villains in James Gunn’s Superman movie?

While these first reactions remain unsure about the film’s overall tone, the Portuguese DC fan-site DC da Depressão also focuses on the film’s humorous and emotional elements.

According to their early report, Gunn’s movie is said to be “closer to the first Wonder Woman film and the first Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Meanwhile, Campea also hit home the film’s surprisingly heavy sci-fi elements within its storyline.

Even still, it’s still worth taking these takes with a healthy dose of speculation. Gunn’s Superman movie isn’t set to be released until July and a lot can change in the editing room in that time.

Gunn’s Superman will relaunch the character for a new audience, complete with a brand new cast.

As mentioned above, Corenswet will play Clark Kent / Superman, with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan stepping into the shoes of intrepid reporter Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult will play villain and Superman-hater Lex Luthor.

The film will also feature appearances from Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as a Green Lantern known as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.
