It is just over seven months until the new Superman film flies into theaters. As excitement builds, we investigate the stellar cast that has been assembled for this movie.
Superman is set to be the first film in the new DC Universe (DCU) helmed by James Gunn. Gunn has also written the script and directed the film, which takes its inspiration from the All-Star Superman comic book, which ran from 2005-08.
Filming for the movie wrapped in July, and it is now in post-production, ahead of its scheduled release date on July 11, 2025. Here is everything we know about the film.
Gunn has put together a stellar cast to bring this new version of Superman to our screens. Here is our rundown of the key figures and their track record in movies and TV.
Superman/Clark Kent – David Corenswet
There was much speculation about who would don the famous suit before the up-and-coming star David Corenswet was named.
Corenswet first majorly landed in the viewing public’s consciousness in 2019 when he starred in Netflix series The Politician as River Barkley, who ran against lead character Payton Hobart for student body president.
In 2020, he starred in historical drama Hollywood as Jack Castello, a World War II veteran who moves to Hollywood to try and fulfil his dream of becoming an actor.
A real breakthrough year for Corenswet was 2022, when he starred in the HBO miniseries We Own This City, as well as the films Look Both Ways and Pearl.
Lois Lane – Rachel Brosnahan
Rachel Brosnahan is most famous for playing the title character in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel from 2017 to 2023.
Brosnahan played Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel, an upper-middle class American housewife who turns to stand-up comedy after her husband leaves her. Over the course of the series, which ran to 43 episodes over five seasons, Mrs Maisel rises to become a world famous comedian.
For her role in the show, Brosnahan won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2018 and Golden Globes in 2018 and 19. She was also nominated for an Emmy for her work on House of Cards (2013-15).
Lex Luthor – Nicholas Hoult
Superman’s arch-nemesis Lex Luthor is played by British actor Nicholas Hoult. Hoult first broke through as a child in 2002 film About a Boy. As a teen, he was in iconic UK drama Skins from 2007-8.
Hoult’s big-screen breakthrough as an adult came in 2011 when he played Dr Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: First Class. He also played Beast in subsequent X-Men films.
Since then, some of his notable roles have included playing Lord of the Rings writer JRR Tolkien in 2019’s Tolkien and Peter III in the Hulu comedy-drama The Great from 2020-23.
Perry White – Wendell Pierce
The editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet, and Clark and Lois’ boss, is played by veteran US actor Wendell Pierce.
After being a character actor for many years, Pierce first gained widespread recognition for his role as Detective Bunk Moreland in HBO series The Wire from 2002-08.
His later TV work has included long-running roles as James Greer in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (2018-23) and as Robert Zane in Suits from 2013-19.
On the big screen, he has had supporting roles in a range of famous movies, including Malcom X (1992), Ray (2004), Horrible Bosses (2011) and Bad Moms (2016).
Hawkgirl – Isabela Merced
Hawkgirl, a fellow superhero in the film, is portrayed by Isabela Merced.
Merced has experience with superhero films, having played Anya Corazon in the Sony Spider-Man Universe film Madame Web earlier this year.
She first came to prominence in the Nickelodeon show 100 Things To Do Before High School (2014-16) where she played the lead character, CJ Martin. She also played Dora in the big screen adaptation of the beloved pre-school kids show Dora and the Lost City of Gold in 2019.
More recently, she was in Alien: Romulus earlier this year.
Green Lantern/Guy Gardner – Nathan Fillion
The galactic peacekeeper will be portrayed by Nathan Fillion in this movie.
Fillion has played Green Lantern before – the Hal Jordan version – although only in animated films, such as The Death of Superman (2018) and Reign of the Supermen (2019).
Most recently, Fillion has starred in The Rookie, where he plays John Nolan, and its spinoff, The Rookie: Feds.
It should be noted that a Lanterns TV series is in development currently and will form part of the DCU. However, this involves other incarnations of the Green Lantern. Kelly McDonald recently joined the cast of Lanterns.
