Upcoming sequel Joker: Folie a Deux is going to be “mostly a jukebox musical” featuring reinterpretations of at least 15 popular songs, according to insiders on the film.

Various outlets have reported that Joker: Folie a Deux, will be a musical, but which songs will be included has yet to be revealed – although one is thought to be ‘That’s Entertainment’, which gained fame from its use in the 1953 Judy Garland film ‘The Band Wagon’. Significantly, Warner Bros is not commenting on the speculation.

Jukebox musicals have become popular on stage and screen in recent years – think the Mamma Mia! films based on the music of Swedish pop legends ABBA – but it is likely that this will be somewhat darker than those usually seen in the genre.

Details of the plot of Joker: Folie a Deux have been thin on the ground. What we do know is that Lady Gaga will be playing Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and elements of the film will take place in and around Arkham Asylum.

This could hint that the film may take in elements of Harley Quinn’s origin story. In the comics, Harley Quinn first appears as a psychologist in Arkham Asylum, who is manipulated by Joker and falls in love with him.

Other elements that have been confirmed is that the film has a $200 million budget – a significant increase on the $60 million of the first – and actors including Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener and Brendan Gleeson will be appearing.

Joker: Folie a Deux is set to have its theatrical release on October 4.
