Sony executives may want to look away now: Kraven The Hunter has flopped at the box office on its opening weekend, performing even worse than Madame Web did.

Kraven The Hunter flops

The film, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the ‘world’s greatest hunter’ took just $11 million at the box office on its opening weekend, according to Variety. This performance is even worse than another notorious flop from the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), Madame Web. Madame Web took $15.3 million on its opening weekend.

Such low figures on an opening weekend usually indicate that it won’t get much better over the coming days, despite it being a busy time for theaters.

At this rate, the film may struggle to even recoup its costs. It has been reported it cost $110 million to make, so executives will be hoping it performs better around the world.

The end of the SSU

Given Kraven’s performance, it is perhaps unsurprising that it appears that this will be the final movie in the SSU. Of the six films Sony has released based on Spider-Man characters – but not actually featuring Spidey – only the Venom trilogy has been successful, although even Venom: The Last Dance didn’t perform as well as hoped at the box office. A Sony executive was recently reported as saying the company was moving on from it. There are no new movies on the future releases slate, so this could well be the case.

A Sony film that does feature Spider-Man – the Miles Morales version – is also experiencing long delays. The film was supposed to come out earlier this year, but that date was canned in 2023. However, since then, no new date has been confirmed. Here is all we know about that film.
