A Legally Blonde TV series has been confirmed to be in the works, with the star of the original 2001 film, Reece Witherspoon, on board as an executive producer.

Details of show are scarce so far, other than it will be set in the world of Legally Blonde, so it isn’t known if it will focus on Elle Woods, as the film did, or on other characters.

It is being written by John Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – best known for their work on Gossip Girl – and they are also serving as exec producers. Amazon MGM studios is producing the series.

Legally Blonde was a smash hit when it came out in 2001. Based on Amanda Brown’s book of the same name, Legally Blonde focused on fashion-obsessed sorority girl Elle Woods (Witherspoon) who attends Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her boyfriend, but along the way finds an aptitude for law.

The film grossed more than $140 million worldwide and spawned the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde. There was a third film in 2009, but it went straight to video and didn’t star Witherspoon. A stage musical version of Legally Blonde was first staged in 2007 and has also been a hit around the world.

There is no indication yet of when the series might make it to air. In terms of channel, Amazon Prime seems the most likely home for it, given Amazon’s production role.
