For those who’ve had this bit of news pushed from their mind by the never-ending news cycle, here’s a quick refresher. Spain and Spain and Portugal were hit by a wide-spread power outage in late April 2025. It impacted almost everything that was reliant on electricity – including travel systems and telecommunications.

While officials and power grid experts tried to figure out what caused it, locals decided to take matters into their own hands.

According to reports – and videos shared on TikTok – this unexpected bit of downtime provided a great opportunity to have some fun and make new pals – especially for those who couldn’t work.

Forced to put down their phones for a second, the power cut led to impromptu congas, limbo competitions and dancing in the street.

How did Spanish locals react to the black out?

While the power was out, local Spaniards had fun – and they shared most of it on social media.

One video posted to Instagram showed dance parties happening in the street, with one featuring an impromptu conga line.

Meanwhile, over on TikTok, some Madrid locals used the free time to host a limbo competition.

Honestly, it looked like loads of fun.

Dazzling night time photography during Spain blackout

When night time arrived, things got even more interesting. According to one outlet, the lack of light pollution made taking pictures of the stars unmissable.

A photographer named Chema G. Marmol took advantage of his 24-hours with no power and used it to photograph the sky.

”I opened the Photopills app,” he explained, “and the conditions were perfect for some impromptu street astrophotography with the Milky Way as it passed over Montilla, something impossible until now due to light pollution.”
