A man in Japan has blown up his own apartment after an attempt to kill a single cockroach that was bothering him went badly wrong.

While it may sound like something from an old school Looney Tunes cartoon, the man had been plagued by this cockroach and decided to use insecticide to get rid of the pest – with devastating results.

The unnamed man, who lives in Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu in Japan, is reported to have flooded his apartment with insecticide. However, the insecticide – as most are – was highly flammable.

The local Kumamoto Prefectural Police reported that the insecticide is thought to have been ignited by the man’s kotatsu – a heated table often used to eat food from in Japan – which caused an explosion that could be heard across the local area and blew out the exterior windows of the apartment.

Fortunately, the man escaped with only minor injuries. However, the condition of the cockroach is not known. But, given the cockroach’s reputation for resilience, it could well still be on the loose, although possibly a little charred.
