Dakota Johnson plays the lead role in her latest Challengers-style film, Materialists. The film has an all-star cast, with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal playing her love interests. The first trailer for Materialists was released on 18 March by A24. It is a romantic comedy about a matchmaker named Lucy whose business starts to be complicated by a toxic love triangle she finds herself in. Most recently, Johnson was seen filming for the movie adaptation of Colin Hoover’s Verity.

Meanwhile, Evans most recently starred in Red One, and Pascal in Gladiator II. The three actors are very busy, fans are so excited to see them in a movie together. Romantic comedies are lacking in the cinema these days, so we need a new one to obsess over!
With the first trailer out, here is everything that was revealed about Materialists.
What does the Materialist trailer show?
As an expert matchmaker, the trailer establishes Johnson’s character as a sought-after individual who can cater to clients with specific needs. Her character is asked how many marriages she is responsible for and she shyly replies, “Nine.”
At an event, Lucy meets Pascal’s character, a wealthy man. At this point, his character’s name has not been revealed. A few clips are shown of Lucy seeing the rich man where he brings her flowers. To him, she says he is a “unicorn,” meaning he is an “impossible fantasy”. Trust those matchmaker instincts girl!
Who does Evans play?
Evans plays John, Lucy’s ex who is the opposite of Pascal’s character. He asks her, “You’re not going to marry him, are you?” Lucy asks, “Why not,” and John says sarcastically, “Because he’s good-looking and rich.” Well, you can pick and choose in this world, but you can’t have everything.
Still, the trailer hints Lucy is drawn to her ex but is torn between the two men and this threatens to tear her business apart. In one line Lucy confesses, “I don’t think I’m good at my job anymore.”
Cynically John later asks Lucy, “Why does anyone even get married?” In response she says, “Because they’re lonely.”
The trailer hints that Lucy may be engaged or thinking about marrying her wealthy businessman boyfriend, but her feelings for her ex are stopping her.
The trailer rounds out with Lucy sitting with one of her older clients who wants to find a young woman to settle down with.
What will Materialists be about?
It appears the movie will focus on the love triangle between John and Pascal’s character with Johnson’s character Lucy. Since the trailer shows romantic moments with both men, it’s safe to say she will have a relationship with both but will be forced to choose one or nobody.
Who is involved in the movie?
Materialists is directed by Celine Song, whose directorial debut came in 2023 with Past Lives. Song is also a producer on the project alongside David Hinojosa, Christine Vachon, and Pamela Koffle. A24 is distributing the film in the US and Sony Pictures is distributing it worldwide.
When is Materialists releasing?
