Michelle Yeoh has become the first confirmed cast member of the upcoming Blade Runner 2099 series that is in the works at Prime Video.

Yeoh will take one of the lead roles in the series, playing a replicant named Olwen, who is said to be replicant nearing the end of her life, according to Variety.

Blade Runner 2099 will be a series on Prime Video and has been confirmed to be a sequel to the original 1982 film and the 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049.

Yeoh has had a long and successful career, including winning the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Evelyn Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. She has also starred in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, among others.

The casting of Yeoh shows that production of Blade Runner 2099 is moving forward. The show has been in the works for some time, with Ridley Scott – who directed the original 1982 film – saying the plot had been devised as far back as November 2021, and Amazon first said the series was in development in February 2022.

Scott is on board as an executive producer, with Silka Luisa as showrunner. Jonathan van Tulleken is directing the first two episodes and is also an executive producer.

However, no details on what the plot will centre on have been revealed, nor a potential release date for the series. But, with this first casting announcement being made, it should mean that other updates will be forthcoming soon.
