- Mike Flanagan set to write, direct and produce the latest film based on The Exorcist
- Last Exorcist film, The Exorcist: Believer flopped at the box office
- Film billed as new story based in The Exorcist universe

Horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has been confirmed by Blumhouse as being on board to write, direct and produce a new Exorcist film.
Radical take
The new, as yet untitled, film is billed as “a radical new take” on the franchise and “an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe and is not a sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.”
The wording to ensure it is not seen as a sequel is interesting – The Exorcist: Believer was not a huge success at the box office, taking $65.5 million in the US and Canada and $136.2 million worldwide. Director David Gordon Green subsequently pulled out of the next instalment in the franchise.
This will be the fourth time Flanagan and Blumhouse have collaborated, but the first in nearly a decade. Flanagan wrote and produced Oculus in 2013, followed by Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil, both in 2016.
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” said Flanagan. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”
Busy production schedule
Flanagan is busy currently as, along with this, he is also developing a multi film and TV adaptation of Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’ saga.
Blumhouse is also busy, with a slate of films in the works, including Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
