Sunday 11 May is Mother’s Day, so it’s time to remind your mom just how amazing she is.

Grab some flowers, treat her to brunch, and write her a note that she’ll want to hold on to forever. She deserves it. Oh, and don’t forget to upload a throwback snap of you both together on Instagram – it’s a winner.

There are all sorts of fun ways to celebrate your mom, but if just spending quality time together is her vibe, how about getting cosy on the sofa with a feel-good movie?

Grab a couple of massive bowls of popcorn, because here are some top films you might not have even considered, to get you started.

My Best Friend’s Wedding

You can’t go wrong with Julia Roberts at her best. Her character, Julianne, desperately tries to sabotage the wedding between her best friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney) and the bride-to-be Kim (played by Cameron Diaz) in a bid to win him back. The pair had agreed they’d marry if they were both single by the time they were 28, but he calls her weeks before her birthday to say he’s marrying someone else. It’s a chaotic, funny, and emotional rom-com, not to mention an unforgettable scene where Julianne is unwillingly caught up in a dinner party rendition of I Say A Little Prayer, started by George Downes, Julianne’s gay friend (played by Rupert Everett).

Nonnas

Nonnas is inspired by the true story of Joe Scaravella, a Staten Island man who founded Enoteca Maria, a restaurant staffed by real grandmothers from around the world. What more could you want? That’s wholesome enough. Vince Vaughn plays Joe who, after losing his mother – stick with it! – decides to create something meaningful to help him process his grief. He invites grandmothers (“nonnas”) from a mix of cultures to share and cook their own treasured family recipes. It’s funny, feel-good, and might just inspire you to extend your Mother’s Day wishes to your grandmother too

The Birdcage

If your mom loves to laugh, then Birdcage starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane is a solid choice. It’s not your traditional Mother’s Day movie, but it is hilarious and lighthearted all the same. Armand (Williams) and Albert (Lane) are a gay couple who run a drag nightclub in South Beach, Miami. Their son, Val, plans to marry the daughter of a conservative senator, so they agree to pretend to be a straight couple for the occasion. It also stars Hank Azaria as Armand and Albert’s clumsy and very camp house cleaner who steals so many scenes when he’s asked to “blend in” at the wedding ceremony.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

The wildcard pick! Everything Everywhere All at Once is a genre-blending adventure starring Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn. As the title suggests, it really does have a bit of everything: comedy, sci-fi, drama, martial arts, and fantasy. Above all, it’s a thrilling and original film that won seven of its eleven Oscar nominations in 2023. The story follows Evelyn as she discovers she must connect with alternate versions of herself across parallel universes to save the multiverse. At its heart, it’s also a moving mother-daughter story, as Evelyn comes to understand her daughter Joy’s pain – leading to a deeper, more compassionate bond between them.

The Intern

How about a heartwarming comedy-drama starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway? De Niro plays Ben Whittaker, a 70-year-old widowed retiree who decides to apply for a senior intern position at an online fashion company, seeking purpose after an unfulfilling retirement. The company is run by the ambitious young entrepreneur, Jules Ostin (played by Hathaway). Initially met with skepticism by his younger colleagues, Ben wins them over with his charm and wisdom, forming a strong mentorship bond with Jules. It’s a feel-good film that celebrates the power of mentorship and the value of meaningful relationships – perfect for sharing with your mom.
