Mr Beast has overtaken T-Series to become the biggest YouTube channel in the world in terms of numbers of subscribers.

T-Series – an Indian channel that uploads music videos and trailers – had been the number one channel since 2019. However, Mr Beast – who has long been the individual with the most subscribers to a YouTube channel – overtook T-Series on Sunday and since then has stretched his advantage. He now has 269 million subscribers to T-Series’ 266 million.

Avenging Pewdiepie

Mr Beast – real name Jimmy Donaldson – had been closing in on T-Series for a while, and after posting on X (@MrBeast) – formerly Twitter – about being just over 1 million subscribers behind, he immediately gained the most subscribers he had ever received in a day – more than 2 million – to take the lead.

In another post on X, Mr Beast joked: “After 6 years we have finally avenged Pewdiepie” – Swedish star Pewdiepie was the largest channel on YouTube for some time before T-Series overtook him.

Huge stunts

Mr Beast has been a YouTuber since he was a teenager, but in recent years has built his following based on huge stunts – such as staging a real-life version of Squid Game, as well as large acts of philanthropy. In addition to his main channel, he has others focusing on gaming, philanthropy and reactions, which all have tens of millions of subscribers.

Mr Beast’s feat will also be welcome news for Amazon, which is currently developing a TV series with him. ‘Beast Games’ is set to offer the biggest game show prize in history – a cool $5 million cash.
