The next iteration of Apple’s AirPods could contain infrared cameras, which could hit the market in 2026, according to various reports.

Infrared cameras

Reports from Bloomberg and industry analyst Ming-chi Kuo both claim that earphones containing infrared cameras such as the ones used currently in iPhones could be in development.

Currently the cameras in iPhones are used to scan users’ facts for the Face ID security feature. However, if cameras are put into AirPods, it could mean they will be integrated into the Vision Pro and become part of Apple’s spatial computing concept, where sound and media is projected to users.

Kuo’s report mentioned that Foxconn is working on infrared cameras that could be used in AirPods.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg previously reported that Apple was investigating the potential for various types of wearable tech, such as smart glasses. If the AirPods were used with something like the Vision Pro, it could mean that when users turn their heads, the sound in that direction could be amplified to enhance the spatial experience.

It has also been speculated that the cameras could be used in a similar way to how they are used in iPhones as a form of biometric authentication, so it could mean that the AirPod knows who is wearing them and if they are the registered owner.

Tech developments

But to date, Apple is keeping its cards close to its chest and hasn’t commented on the record about the speculation.

Apple is exploring various technological developments currently, including robots that follow users about the house, as well as a tabletop device that uses robotics to adjust a display screen, much like mimicking real-life head movements. However, these projects are reportedly at an early stage of development.
