For years, game developers have worked towards making games more immersive experiences, and now a company has launched a device that means you can smell as well as see what is on screen.

GameScent has launched a new product that uses artificial intelligence to release a smell in real time that is coordinated with the gameplay on screen.

This means that smells such as forests, storms, gunshots and racing cars can be smelt by gamers, which will probably make a change from the usual smells that emanate from gamers’ bedrooms. The makers adds that there is a neutralizer that can be used after a gaming session which means that the smells created won’t linger for hours afterwards.

GameScent says that giving gamers the chance to smell as well as see provides them with enhanced realism, elevating the realism of virtual experiences.

The company adds that it also provides a greater emotional connection for users. On its website it says “Scents have a powerful connection to emotions and memories. GameScent taps into this connection, creating a more emotionally engaging experience for gamers.”

In a press release, GameScent’s president, Casey Bunce, said that studies have shown that the sense of smell strongly imprints in long-term memory more strongly than anything else. “With GameScent, we’re hoping to elevate gamers’ experiences to be more exciting and memorable than they ever have been before.”

The makers say the device – which is a simple plug-and-play device with either a HDMI or 3.5mm audio jack – is compatible with all games consoles, streaming platforms and VR headsets. Additional scents such as sports arena, fresh cut grass and blood (!) are being worked on too and will be released to purchase in the future.

GameScent is available through Amazon and other outlets and can be yours for $149.99.
